Dan Klein's South Jersey Insider Magazine cover - December 2007/January 2008
Many free publications claim they do a lot of things. Dan Klein's South Jersey Insider Magazine is the only one that delivers Print run verification... Click here
The next time a "Free Publication" representative tells you about the number of printed copies, distribution, etc.
Tell 'em to prove it!
As an advertiser you're paying for the number of printed copies. That's what advertising rates are based on. Many free publications inflate, or downright lie, about their actual printed copy number in order to justify their rates to advertisers, and make their publications seem bigger than they are. At the South Jersey Insider, we can't let that go unchallenged. So, as I stated above, the next time a rep tells you the number of copies they print, tell 'em to prove it! If it is what they say, they should be happy to comply, if not, I recommend you tell them good-bye.

What’s on the plate in 2008...
Well, if it’s the plate of Atlantic City development we’re talking about, you couldn’t get anymore on it if you tried. “Piled high” is a term we would use to describe the state of developmental affairs in Atlantic City for 2008. Very high. Of course, there’s a lot of other stuff that goes on in Atlantic City that could be piled into mountains, but that's a story for another day. This issue is all about what’s ahead developmentally in the city that’s always turned on, and Publisher Dan Klein, kicks it off as usual on page 6. Jack Diamond, our lovable CasinoInsider, tackles casino development for 2008 beginning on page 34. Included in his list of openings in 2008 is, of course, the much anticipated Water Club Hotel & Spa at Borgata. Notice we didn’t include the term casino in the title. That’s because there isn’t one as the newest, most luxurious addition to the Borgata “bang” will operate as an entirely separate entity, but with all of Borgata’s amenities, including, of course, its casino. The “piece de resistance” for the project is the indoor pool on the 28th floor that goes right to the outside glass wall. Talk about your proverbial “view To Die For.” Over at Boardwalk Hall it’s one big show after another starting with Hannah Montana and Milley Cyrus on January 5th, to Celine Dion on September 20th. Mixed in between are R. Kelly, Van Halen, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, Dancing With the Stars, and The Mummer's “Show of Shows”... Of course, this entire issue is devoted to everything that is worth doing today, tomorrow, next week, next month as well as months down the road.

On the Cover: It’s a veritable “Plateful” of stuff going on in 2008 here in Southern New Jersey, and it’s our job to bring it to you. As Usual, we gladly comply. The cover of this issue of Dan Klein's South Jersey Insider Magazine, SJI for short, features a collage of people, places and things which will impact 2008.

A note to AC's Casinos... Don't panic, the 'Boomers' are on the way...

Casino Insider header

AS ATLANTIC CITY'S CASINO INDUSTRY GRAPPLES WITH COMPETITION IN NEARBY PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW YORK, CASINO INSIDER SAYS, "STAND PAT, THE BABY BOOMER RETIREMENT BONANZA IS ABOUT TO SAVE THE DAY..."

I was originally going to write about all of the wonderful deals, incentives, shows, and events taking place this fall in Atlantic City's casinos. That was before I read a report reminding me that this year begins the much anticipated cycle of "Baby Boomer" retirements.

Why is that a big deal for Atlantic City casino operators?

Well, if they've done their homework, they would know that these sixty-five year olds aren't going to be quite like any other retirement group before.

First, it's probably best to not use the term "retiree" when refering to this demographic group. That's too, senior citizen, and this group will defy that term at all cost.

The bonanza for Atlantic City's casinos lies in the fact that this group has plenty of money, loves to travel, thinks nothing of pampering themselves, and, has plenty of time on its hands. Casinos like Borgata, with their new Water Club Hotel tower opening in 2008, Trump Taj Mahal, and Harrah's are all positioning themselves perfectly to cater to this discerning group of consumers. Timing, as they say, is everything. And, the timing of the additions to the Atlantic City gaming market couldn't be more perfect in terms of being in a position to meet the expected future demand. A demand that will last the next twenty five years at least.

Now, I can't tell you for sure that any of Atlantic City's casino executives have taken the Baby Boomer retirement phenomenon into consideration during the planning of their respective futures. If they haven't, shame on them. For the past four years the emphasis of casino marketing has been toward the younger demographic, ages twenty five to forty five. That's an important group to be sure. After all, if you're going to survive over the long haul, you're going to have to develop new customers and introduce your product to new bodies. Plus, this young, hip, partying crowd has been one of the reasons Atlantic City has been able to successfully transition their respective business models to appeal to this next generation gambler.

Having said that, the Boomer retirement market offers a tremendous opportunity for Atlantic City's casinos to add to their bottom lines significantly.

Whether they aggressively go after this huge windfall-waiting-to-happen, or continue to scratch their collective heads over new competition in Pennsylvania and New York, remains to be seen, but the smart money's on the guile of Atlantic City's casino executives recognizing the tremendous upside potential of this very affluent group and ramping up to meet their needs.

Sources tell the Insider that Atlantic City casinos will be offering some terrific promotions going into the late fall and holiday seasons, as they ramp up to recapture customers lost over the past few months to the convenience of the Pennsylvania slot market.

Great entertainment (Pennsy slot parlors have none), "Big Money" promotions and giveaways, and terrific rates on overnight accommodations mean the Atlantic City customer is once again King in the former "Queen of Resorts."

Next month I'll peruse the holpleasure palaces. An issue you won't want to miss if you'll be coming to Atlantic City over the holiday season.

Until then, play smart, stay within your budget; always sign up for casino customer cards, and always try and play “maximum credits,” if you can. You can’t hit the Jackpot unless you do. And feel free to send me an e-mail if you have any questions about Atlantic City’s casinos...
