Chinese Fun At
Tropicana...
October 2007
Had a backache or stiff muscles lately?
I’ll never complain again after seeing
Cirque Shanghai-Bai Xi “The Show of
100 Wonders” at the Tropicana. It’s
true…I wondered at least one hundred
times during the performance just how
those young Chinese acrobats twisted
and turned while flying through the air.
The troupe of Chinese youngsters
entertains with a smile. The fifteen
sequences of the show feature several
exciting acrobatic feats that use
bicycles, wheels, chairs, hoops, and
cables as props for the daring stunts.
The performers are dressed in magnificent,
colorful costumes, representing
China. The breathtaking backdrop
scenery and tapestry curtains add a rich
depth to the show.
“Cirque Shanghai-Bai Xi”
runs through Wednesday, November
7th. Tickets are $25, and
may be purchased at the Tropicana box
office, or Ticketmaster at
ticketmaster.com Daily performance
times vary, so check out tropicana.net for the schedule.
While there, why not make it a
totally Chinese evening? The
Tropicana’s Golden Dynasty restaurant
has been completely renovated to
include moon gate entrances and an
exquisite Buddha garden. Try the tempura
lobster and shrimp, and be sure to
sample some Cantonese specialties. Or,
enjoy items from the traditional
Chinese menu.
LET’S DO SUNDAY BRUNCH
The Atlantic City Country
Club in Northfield recently ended a
100-year members-only history. Under
Harrah’s ownership, the ACCC has
introduced its Sunday buffet brunch to
the public. The charming room and
patio offer spectacular skyline and golf
course views.
You won’t miss the big game,
since brunch hours are 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Priced at $24.95 per person, children
under 12 eat for $12.95.
Numerous appetizing dishes
force tough decisions. Create your own
omelettes, or select eggs benedict and
fresh waffles. Other items include
bacon, potatoes, and sausage. Bagels
come with several flavors of cream
cheese; smoked salmon and fresh fruit
provide lower calorie options. There is
also a carving station.
Finally, feed your sweet tooth
at Southern New Jersey’s largest chocolate
pastry display, which includes a
chocolate fountain. Those wishing
sugar-free confections also have a few
choices. Don’t overlook the non-chocolate
goodies like fruit tarts, cinnamon
buns, cookies, and pastries.
Talented student groups from
area high schools perform two 40-minutes
sets of soft background music,
beginning at 11 a.m.
Reservations are recommended.
Complimentary valet parking is
available.
TELL ‘EM WHO SENT YOU
One of Atlantic City’s most
fun restaurants is off the Boardwalk.
Chef Vola is located in the cellar of a
typical multi-story shore house. The
step-down foyer almost feels like you’d
need a password to enter. The walls are
filled with autographed photos of
celebrities who have performed in
Atlantic City.
For years, Chef Vola did not
advertise, and it was an achievement to
actually get reservations. It seemed you
had to be referred by someone “in the
know.”
The three-room eatery now
advertises a phone number for reservations,
which are necessary far in
advance. Whatever it takes, get there
for the great food. Everything is a la
carte.
Entrees are in the high $20s
and $30s, but with such abundant platters,
the leftovers are a real value. Skip
the side dishes - they just pad the bill.
My husband Norman, some
friends, and I dined there recently.
Three of us split three different entrees,
all overflowing on the plates.
Appetizers are wonderful, and the family-
style salad bowl is a winner. Rich,
delicious desserts are homemade.
It is a real “scene,” crowded
and noisy. However, the staff obviously
enjoys their work and provides terrific
service. Chef Vola only takes cash, and
is a BYOB, so bring your favorite libation.
STOP THE LEAKING
For half of September, my
kitchen ceiling had a large hole over
the table. Some caulking from the
shower in my master bath cracked,
sending dripping water through the drywall
ceiling beneath it.
Panicked, and envisioning
water crashing through, I called
Benjamin Franklin Plumbing in
Pleasantville. I had used them before,
and found them prompt, courteous, and
reasonable. This second house call was
the same…they did a great job.
It was less than two hours
from my call to opening the door for
John, the plumber. Following some
tests, it became painfully obvious that
John would have to cut through the
drywall. He covered the entire floor
under that spot with adhesive plastic,
and began chipping away. John quickly
found the source of the leak, sealed it
off and left my kitchen in a spotless
condition.
Benjamin Franklin also offers
a pre-paid customer loyalty program
that discounts regular service to
members.
