Many free publications claim they do a lot of things. Dan Klein's South Jersey Insider Magazine is the only one that delivers Print run verification... Click here
The next time a "Free Publication" representative tells you about the number of printed copies, distribution, etc.
Tell 'em to prove it!
As an advertiser you're paying for the number of printed copies. That's what advertising rates are based on. Many free publications inflate, or downright lie, about their actual printed copy number in order to justify their rates to advertisers, and make their publications seem bigger than they are. At the South Jersey Insider, we can't let that go unchallenged. So, as I stated above, the next time a rep tells you the number of copies they print, tell 'em to prove it!
If it is what they say, they should be happy to comply, if not, I recommend you tell them
good-bye.

December 2007/January 2008

What’s on the plate in 2008...
Well, if it’s the plate of Atlantic City development we’re talking about, you couldn’t get
anymore on it if you tried. “Piled high” is a term we would use to describe the state of
developmental affairs in Atlantic City for 2008. Very high. Of course, there’s a lot of other
stuff that goes on in Atlantic City that could be piled into mountains, but that's a story for
another day. This issue is all about what’s ahead developmentally in the city that’s
always turned on, and Publisher Dan Klein, kicks it off as usual on page 6. Jack
Diamond, our lovable CasinoInsider, tackles casino development for 2008 beginning
on page 34. Included in his list of openings in 2008 is, of course, the much anticipated
Water Club Hotel & Spa at Borgata. Notice we didn’t include the term casino in the
title. That’s because there isn’t one as the newest, most luxurious addition to the
Borgata “bang” will operate as an entirely separate entity, but with all of Borgata’s
amenities, including, of course, its casino. The “piece de resistance” for the project is
the indoor pool on the 28th floor that goes right to the outside glass wall. Talk about your
proverbial “view To Die For.” Over at Boardwalk Hall it’s one big show after another
starting with Hannah Montana and Milley Cyrus on January 5th, to Celine Dion on
September 20th. Mixed in between are R. Kelly, Van Halen, Keith Urban and Carrie
Underwood, Dancing With the Stars, and The Mummer's “Show of Shows”... Of
course, this entire issue is devoted to everything that is worth doing today, tomorrow,
next week, next month as well as months down the road.

On the Cover:
It’s a veritable
“Plateful” of stuff going on in 2008
here in Southern New Jersey, and
it’s our job to bring it to you. As
Usual, we gladly comply. The cover
of this issue of Dan Klein's South
Jersey Insider Magazine, SJI for
short, features a collage of people,
places and things which will impact
2008.

Notes from Paul McCartney's Return To AC...
Sands President Resigns
The Paul McCartney concert held at Boardwalk Hall on September 28th was the concert event of the season thus far. A sellout crowd in excess of 20,000 packed the renovated $90 million edifice to watch the Beatle legend put on a three-hour show. With ticket prices at $250 and $150 nobody was really sure "If Money Can't Buy You Love," as McCartney sang. Here are some observations from the Big Show:...
1.) The Boardwalk Hall must do a better job with getting people inside the building when there is a sellout. Paying customers were sandwiched like sardines out front for about 25 minutes while people were searched. There has got to be a better way.
2.) Donald Trump may have benefitted from the concert more than Park Place Entertainment, which paid a whopping $2.5 million site fee to land the McCartney gig. Trump Plaza still has an adjacent walkway right into the Boardwalk Hall from the casino. That's why Trump Plaza bought $144,000 worth of tickets to the concert, and the casino used them for its high rollers. Lines at the conessions stands were like the long and winding road McCartney sang about.
3.) The building seemed to hold the event well once everybody was inside and McCartney even mentioned Atlantic City mayor Lorenzo Langford during the show. Earlier Langford had a special meeting with McCartney, along with talk show host Harry Hurley. The concert attendee list was like a Who's Who in Atlantic City. Nearly everybody who was anybody was there. And so was The Insider...

Ocean City Bay Side Development Voted Down
The Ocean City Zoning Board scored a victory for open space when it voted 7-1 against granting a variance to R&R Development, which wanted to build nine $1 million homes on the last open parcel of bayfront real estate in Ocean City, between Second and Third Street along the bay. The Zoning Board hearing was packed with residents who did not want the project. One local resident, attorney Doug Walker, said it was like trying to put Cinderella's slipper on the wrong foot. The City of Ocean City may now try and buy the property and turn it into a bayside park for the public to use. The property is zoned as a Marine Harbor Village. Ocean City continues to fight its image as an overdeveloped resort. One Zoning Board member, while voting no, said she didn't want Ocean City to become Avalon. Wow.

Sands President Herbert Wolfe Resigns
The resignation of Herb Wolfe from the Sands should come as no surpise. Under the big, bad Wolfe, as many Sands employees referred to him, the casino cut back its table games, laid off employees, and lost revenue. Sands employees are now rooting for Park Place Entertainment to acquire the property from Carl Icahn. The once-proud Sands used to be a leader in the resort, signing Frank Sinatra to a long-term concert deal in its showroom.

South Jersey loses beloved media mogul Howard Green
The death of media mogul Howard Green was a shock to everybody. Green, whose radio and television empire dominated the South Jersey area, died suddenly on the last weekend of September. Green had built NBC TV 40 into a major television station, and had improved the nightly newscast dramatically. Look for station general manager Jane Stark to carry on the Green legacy.
